A Texas ID card (issued by DPS) is valid for up to six years.
Details:
- Age 59 and younger: six years, expiring on your birthday; the fee is $16 for both a new card and a renewal.
- Age 60 and older: also six years, but the fee is only $6.
- Limited-term ID (for temporary visitors to the U.S.): expires when your period of lawful presence ends, or after one year if your status is listed as “duration of status.”
On renewals: you can renew up to two years before expiration or within two years after. If the card has been expired for more than two years, it can’t be renewed — you’ll have to apply as a new applicant with the full document set. Replacing a lost or damaged card doesn’t change the expiration date.
